105th International Labour
Conference, June, Geneva,
Switzerland Graduate Women International (GWI) United Nations (UN)
Representative Ms. Katherine Hagen has been making interventions on GWI¡¯s behalf
at the 105th International Labour Conference (ILC) in
Geneva. This is the annual policy-setting event of the International Labour
Organisation (ILO). This annual Conference brings together governments',
workers' and employer's delegates of the ILO member states. Often called an
international parliament of labour, the Conference establishes and adopts
international labour standards and is a forum for discussion of key social and
labour questions. This Conference is an opportunity for GWI to advocate for
enhancing women¡¯s economic participation as a means to promote international
sustainable growth and economic development, increase health and living
standards and contribute to women¡¯s agency and empowerment. Ms. Hagen will
deliver a plenary statement at the ILC - read the full statement here.

Women¡¯s economic empowerment takes centre stage
at UNCTAD expert meeting The United Nations Conference of Trade and Development, UNCTAD, is
the United Nations body responsible for dealing with development issues,
particularly trade, the main driver of development. At the June 2016 meeting in
Geneva on¡®Trade as a tool for the economic empowerment of women¡¯, experts
discussed how to ensure coherence between trade and the economic empowerment of
women, and cast light on ways to design and implement the "transformative
actions" for gender equality and women's economic empowerment expected under the
2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development (AAAA).
UNCTAD¡¯s Trade and Gender Programme supports equal rights for women to
economic resources and uses Information and Communication technology (ICT) to
empower women, a major advocacy area for GWI.
